The Link Between Smoking and Heart Disease

Many smokers may not know that connection between smoking and heart disease. Most of them are aware of the many other ill effects such as lung cancer. Equally dangerous and fatal is the link between smoking and heart disease. Smokers are so addicted to the nicotine that they can put up with the smell, the bad sense of taste and the respiratory problem. Here a another good reason to quit smoking. Smoking can cause heart disease.

About Smoking and Heart Disease

Actually, the warnings are well publicised, whether it is in the newspaper, magazine or on the cigarette box itself. The warnings are very clear that there is a direct correlation between smoking and heart disease. However, most smokers choose to ignore it. Perhaps, it is the thought that it will not happen to them. The fact is that it can, and most likely it will, if they continue smoking.

City dwellers are very familiar with fumes from heavy vehicles. It suffocates or perhaps the mere thought of breathing the thick black fumes is enough to make people turn around or cover their nose. Well, they have a right to be concern. There are carcinogens in those fumes. Those same carcinogens can be found in cigarettes.

The carcinogens present in cigarettes are part of the link between smoking and heart disease. The nicotine from the cigarettes accumulates in the blood stream. As a result, the blood thickens and it is easily clotted. As the contaminated blood is pumped through the heart, the nicotine will build up on the heart valves, which can lead to a heart attack.

Now that you know the correlation between smoking and heart disease, you should consider quitting smoking if you are a smoker. If you have just started smoking, it is not too late to reverse the ill effects because the nicotine has not had enough time to cause serious problems yet.

However, if you have been smoking for years, your health is in serious trouble. If you continue to smoke, it is likely to lead to one chronic disease or another. It should surprise anybody that a smoker's lungs can be described as alike to black trash bags -certainly nobody would want their lungs to look like that.

There are many ways to quit smoking and thus prevent heart disease. Consult a doctor for the various treatment options. The sooner you start, the sooner you are on your way to better health.
